Alchemical Symbols & Their Meanings
Alchemical symbols are not a mystical alphabet invented to look arcane. They are a working notation — a set of glyphs that let a practitioner write down a substance, a process or a planetary correspondence in one stroke, on a page a rival might read over their shoulder. Between roughly the twelfth and the eighteenth centuries this notation grew, splintered into competing private codes, and eventually collapsed into the chemical formulas still in use. What survives on tattoo flash, album covers and pendant charms today is the visually strongest fraction of that system: the tria prima glyphs for sulphur, mercury and salt, the four classical element triangles, and a handful of planetary metal signs. This collection treats each one as what it was — a piece of technical vocabulary with a documented history — rather than as free-floating occult decoration.
Overview
Alchemical notation was deliberately unstable, and nothing else about it makes sense until that is granted. Alchemists wrote for two audiences at once: a successor who could be trusted with the work, and a censor, patron or competitor who could not. The result was Decknamen — cover-names — and glyph sets that varied between authors, workshops and centuries. The same triangle-and-cross that means sulphur in one seventeenth-century manuscript can mean something else entirely in another; a 1652 printed table and a 1720 printed table will disagree with each other in a dozen places. Nineteenth-century occult revivalists, and then twentieth-century designers, flattened all of this into a single tidy chart, and that flattened chart is what circulates online now. It is useful, and it is a simplification.
Underneath the variation there is a real structure, and it comes from a real theory. Medieval Islamic alchemy, transmitted into Latin Europe through translations of Jabir ibn Hayyan and others, proposed that all metals were compounded from two principles: a combustible, soul-like sulphur and a fluid, volatile mercury. Paracelsus, in the early sixteenth century, added a third — salt, the fixed body that remains after burning — giving the tria prima that dominates later European practice. Sulphur, mercury and salt are therefore not three chemicals in the modern sense. They are three roles a substance can play, and the glyphs mark those roles.
The planetary metals are the other structural spine. Seven metals were matched to seven classical planets — gold to the Sun, silver to the Moon, iron to Mars, copper to Venus, tin to Jupiter, lead to Saturn, quicksilver to Mercury — and each pair shared one glyph. This is why the Mars glyph and the iron glyph are the same mark, and why that mark later became the standard biological sign for male. The correspondence was not decorative: it encoded observed properties, such as lead's dullness and weight standing in for Saturn's slowness, and it gave a practitioner working without a periodic table a mnemonic system that held together.
What makes these glyphs unusually good design objects is that they were built for legibility at small scale by hand. A triangle, a triangle crossed by a bar, a circle over a cross, a crescent — each is reducible to three or four strokes and stays readable when scratched into a margin or inked at two centimetres on a wrist. That economy is exactly why they have outlasted the theory they encoded.
The tria prima: sulphur, mercury, salt
These three carry most of the modern interest, and most of the modern confusion. Sulphur is the principle of combustibility and, by extension, of soul, drive and the part of a thing that burns. Its usual glyph is a triangle above a cross. Mercury is the principle of fluidity, volatility and transmissibility — spirit, the part that escapes — drawn as a crescent above a circle above a cross. Salt is what is left when the other two have gone: body, ash, the fixed residue, marked by a circle bisected by a horizontal line.
Paracelsus intended these as a diagnostic framework for medicine as much as for metallurgy. A disease could be read as a disorder of one principle, and a remedy prepared to answer it. That medical framing is why the tria prima outlived the transmutation project entirely, feeding into early pharmacy through the iatrochemists. When people today read the three as mind, spirit and body, they are using a genuinely traditional gloss — but a late and simplified one.
The element triangles, and why they are so easy to confuse
Fire, water, air and earth are represented by four triangles that differ only in orientation and the presence of a crossbar: fire an upward triangle, water a downward one, air an upward triangle with a bar, earth a downward triangle with a bar. The logic is compositional rather than pictorial — up for the ascending, hot elements, down for the descending, cold ones, the bar marking the pair that share a quality with their opposite.
This elegance is also a trap. The four are near-identical at a glance, they are frequently reproduced mirrored or rotated in modern flash, and the earth and air glyphs in particular are swapped constantly. Anyone planning to wear one should check the orientation against a primary source rather than a search-result thumbnail, because the difference between the fire glyph and the earth glyph is a single horizontal line.
From secrecy to chemistry
The notation died for an ordinary reason: it stopped being useful. Once Lavoisier's naming reforms and then Berzelius's letter-based system arrived around the turn of the nineteenth century, a chemist could write a compound's composition rather than its name, and could do so in a way every other chemist would read identically. The glyphs' great virtue — compression — was outcompeted by a system that was compressed and unambiguous at the same time.
A few survived by migrating. The Mars and Venus glyphs became the standard sex symbols in biology, a usage Linnaeus popularised in the eighteenth century. The Jupiter glyph persisted in pharmacy for tin. And the whole set was rescued as imagery, rather than as notation, by nineteenth-century occultism and then by Jung, who read alchemical operations as a projected psychology of individuation. Most contemporary use descends from Jung far more directly than from any laboratory.
The planetary metals, and the logic behind each pairing
The seven-metal, seven-planet correspondence is the most systematic part of the whole notation, and each pairing had reasons attached rather than being assigned arbitrarily. Gold went to the Sun on grounds of colour, non-tarnishing brilliance and singular value. Silver went to the Moon for its white lustre and for the long association of both with reflection rather than emission. Iron went to Mars because it was the metal weapons were made from, and Mars was the war god — the most direct pairing of the seven. Copper went to Venus through Cyprus, the island whose name gives copper its Latin name cuprum and which held a major cult of Aphrodite.
The remaining three are subtler. Tin went to Jupiter, a pairing usually explained through tin's role in producing bronze and thus in the material culture of established civilisation. Lead went to Saturn on grounds of weight, dullness and toxicity, matched to the slowest-moving visible planet and the most inauspicious of the classical seven — Saturnine as a description of temperament preserves this. Quicksilver went to Mercury for the obvious reason that it is the only liquid metal, matching the fastest planet and the messenger god who moves between worlds.
Because the glyph served both members of each pair, alchemical writing carries a structural ambiguity that a modern reader has to hold in mind: the same mark in the same manuscript may be naming a substance in one line and a planetary influence or a timing instruction in the next. Operations were frequently specified to be performed under the correct planetary hour, so the notation was doing double duty as a calendar.
The operations, and the imagery attached to them
Beyond substances, alchemical texts encoded processes — and these carried the most elaborate visual symbolism in the whole tradition. Calcination, dissolution, separation, conjunction, putrefaction, distillation and coagulation are the commonest listing, though the number and order vary by author as much as the glyphs do. Each acquired an emblematic image: the raven or nigredo blackening for putrefaction, the white swan or albedo for purification, the peacock's tail for the iridescence observed at a particular stage, the red king and white queen for conjunction, and the resurrected phoenix or rubedo for completion.
These emblems are what most people actually encounter when they meet alchemy, because they dominate the illustrated printed works of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries — the Rosarium Philosophorum, the Splendor Solis, Maier's Atalanta Fugiens. They are also where the interpretive stakes are highest, since the same image can be read as a laboratory instruction, an allegory of spiritual transformation, or both simultaneously. Practitioners themselves disagreed about this, and the disagreement was not incidental: whether the Great Work was a chemical operation, an inner one, or an inner one performed through a chemical one is the central unresolved question of the entire tradition.
Jung's twentieth-century reading, which treats the whole sequence as a projected map of psychological individuation, has been so influential that it is now the default interpretation in popular sources. It is a serious reading with real textual support, but it is one interpretation of a contested body of material, not the settled meaning.
Wearing them honestly
Alchemical glyphs sit unusually well in tattoo work — they are small, high-contrast, linear and genuinely old. There is no closed tradition guarding them and no living community that treats their use as appropriation, which makes them a comparatively low-risk choice.
The risks that do exist are factual rather than cultural. First, orientation errors, as above. Second, source drift: a great many chart images circulating online contain at least one wrong glyph, inherited from a single mislabelled nineteenth-century reproduction. Third, the Decknamen problem in reverse — a glyph chosen for a meaning found on a listicle may carry that meaning in one author and its near-opposite in another. If a specific meaning matters, trace the glyph to a named source and century rather than to a chart.
There is one further consideration specific to this vocabulary. Because alchemical imagery was absorbed wholesale into nineteenth-century occultism and then into twentieth-century esoteric movements, a handful of individual marks have picked up associations that have nothing to do with the laboratory. Anyone choosing a less common glyph should check what else it currently signals, particularly among symbols that combine alchemical elements with later occult additions.
