Hand Gesture Meanings
A gesture that means “perfect” in one country can be a serious insult in another. These guides cover each gesture's meaning and origin — and, unusually, exactly where it can cause offense, so you can travel without an accidental faux pas.
- Crossed FingersCrossed fingers are used in Western culture to wish for good luck (fingers crossed!) or, when concealed behind the back, to mentally invalidate a promise or lie. The gesture originated in pre-Christian or early Christian European traditions and is now widely used as a symbol of hope and positive anticipation.
- Fig SignThe fig sign (figa, mano fico) is an obscene gesture representing sexual intercourse or female genitalia in its insulting form, used as an offensive gesture in Turkey, Brazil, and parts of southern Europe. In its protective form, it is an ancient amulet against the evil eye, worn as jewellery and carved into protective objects across Mediterranean cultures.
- FistThe raised fist signals power, defiance, solidarity, and resistance. It is the universal emblem of collective struggle and political protest, widely associated with labour movements, civil rights, and anti-colonial activism. In athletic contexts, the fist pump expresses personal triumph and determination.
- NamasteNamaste combines the gesture of pressed palms (anjali mudra) with the spoken word to form a greeting that acknowledges the divine or spiritual essence within another person. It is a gesture of deep respect, humility, and recognition of shared humanity, widely used across South Asia and increasingly in global wellness and yoga cultures.
- OK SignThe traditional OK sign means approval, agreement, or 'everything is fine.' It is used universally in sports, diving, and casual affirmation. However, it has been adopted as a symbol by white supremacist groups following a 2017 internet hoax that became partially self-fulfilling, creating significant contextual ambiguity.
- Open PalmThe open palm universally signals stop, peace, or openness. It shows that the hand carries no weapon and the person intends no harm — making it one of humanity's most ancient and cross-cultural gestures of peaceful intent. In sacred contexts across multiple religions, the raised open palm is a gesture of blessing and divine protection.
- Peace SignThe peace sign (V with palm outward) universally signals peace, goodwill, or victory. It is widely used in photographs as a friendly, positive gesture. The inward-facing variant, however, is an obscene insult in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia.
- Pointing FingerThe pointing finger directs attention to a person, place, or thing. It is universal as a cognitive tool but culturally variable as a social act. Pointing at a person with the index finger is considered rude in many parts of Asia, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa, where pointing with the whole hand, chin, or lips is preferred.
- Thumbs UpThe thumbs-up means approval, agreement, or 'good job' across most of the world. But in parts of the Middle East, West Africa, South America, and elsewhere it is an offensive, insulting gesture — so it is not as universal as it seems.
