Our Methodology

We hold every page to one standard: it should tell you something you couldn't get by skimming three other symbol sites in thirty seconds. In practice that means:

  • Depth over breadth. Each main symbol page is written to substantial length with genuinely distinct sections — general meaning, historical origins, and at least three differentiated cultural perspectives.
  • Specificity over vagueness. We name traditions, periods and places rather than writing “this is important in many cultures.”
  • Cross-checking. Cultural and historical claims are checked across multiple sources, with particular care for living religious traditions.
  • No manufactured pages. Sub-pages (tattoo meaning, in dreams) are only created where there's genuinely enough distinct material to justify them — never as filler.

When we cover symbols sacred to a living tradition, we follow the principles on our Cultural Respect page, and we welcome corrections from members of those traditions.
